David Maghakian is a Presbyterian Preacher’s Kid (PK)! David was born in San Francisco when his father was in seminary. The church and its amazing grace has been a part of David’s life since day one.
David graduated from the University of Minnesota with a degree in Elementary Education and Communications. After serving as a YMCA Program Director he answered the call by God to enter the Ministry of Word and Sacrament. David attended Pittsburgh Theological Seminary and the University of Pittsburgh in Pennsylvania. He graduated in 1987 with a Masters in Divinity and a Masters in Social Work with an emphasis in Mental Health and Administration.
Once he finished grad school David was called to be the Associate Pastor of Calvary Presbyterian Church in Los Angeles, California. During that time David helped the congregation grow by 80 members. After 3 years in Los Angeles, David was called to be the Head of Staff at the First Presbyterian Church of Itasca in Chicago, Illinois.
Ministry was rich and fruitful during the 10 years he served this congregation. David was then called to North Como Presbyterian Church in Roseville, Minnesota where he served as Head of Staff for 13 years then Co-Pastor for 2 years when North Como merged with Knox Presbyterian Church and became New Life Presbyterian Church. The many years at this dynamic and faith-filled congregation lead to many mission ventures including housing homeless families, starting a large community garden, assisting in launching a powerful music ministry and much more.
After nearly 30 years of church ministry David was called to a few years of sabbatical as he discerned where God was calling him. In September of 2016, David was called to be a Child Protection Social Worker in Hennepin County, Minnesota. Many children and families have received the care they needed to move forward in love as David has come alongside them to nurture and encourage their growth following significant trauma.
At this time in David’s life he is celebrating being a grandfather to granddaughters Kendall and Brynly and father to children Erika and Kevin as well as loving his golden retriever Dakota!
David believes his call to the faith community of First Presbyterian Church of St. Croix Falls is a blessing and honor. This faith community is loving, hope filled and open to the movement of the Holy Spirit. David brings energy, creativity, compassion, humor and vision.
